ResQ your dinner!

by Kaisa

It is difficult for restaurant managers to estimate how much food they should prepare for a day because the amount of customers varies. Everyday a lot of good food gets thrown into the garbage. Restaurants in Finland throw out 20% of the meals they produce, which is approximately 80 million kilograms waste food every year. This food has gone through the entire supply chain, all of which effort is worthless. All of the resources (for example water, soil, labour, processing, storage and transportation) go to waste when food is discarded.

ResQ Club is a Finnish company which goal is to eliminate food waste and generate more revenue for restaurants. Many restaurants are interested in selling their leftovers instead of dumping them at the end of the day. With ResQ Club restaurants get new customers that wouldn’t otherwise come.

The main idea is that registered restaurants can sell their leftovers at discount rates via ResQ Club. Prices are often less than half of the original price. Restaurants can sell as many portions as they have. Sometimes it is only for example one piece of cake and sometimes more. After the proper lunch empoloyees in restaurants pack the leftover portions and put those in the fridge to wait for pick-up.

Consumers can discover and buy meals with application or online. Once consumer has located a meal he/she wants to buy it needs only few clicks and payment and then customer is able to go to the restaurant to pick up the meal. Customers can set their diet, allergies and favourite restaurants to their accounts which makes the process easier.

How does it sound to buy restaurant food at lower price? Would you like to buy ready to eat food instead of going to grocery store and start cooking after a long day? What is the worst waste food experience you have?

  1. Great post!

I would probably be willing to buy restaurant food at a lower price. It depends on how fresh it is of course, but if its from the same day that would be great.

I used to work at a grocery store where we also threw away lots of perfectly fine food every day, because they were at the expiration date. But because of laws it isn’t allowed to sell it at a lower price or give it away. I’m guessing lots of people wouldn’t care buying/receiving food just past the expiration date.

  2. I also think I would be willing to buy restaurant food at a lower price. In fact, why would I ever go to a restaurant during opening hours, if I could get it discounted once they close?

I could see this type of “discount hunting” as a potential problem for restaurant owners if they decide to use this service. This happened to many Groupon customers, which was a similar service, though not focusing on expired food, but mobilising consumer purchasing power.

Very interesting post, cool concept, but I would be very reluctant to use this if I was a restaurant owner.

  3. I think this is an amazing idea. Especially for us students, with a limited budget, this could be extremely attractive. If one can also personalize settings in the app and for example look for healthy meals, I can easily see myself going to a resturant after a long day of studying for my exams, to buy a healthy meal for half the price. I know that there is an ongoing discussion whether this such apps will cost resturants customers. But i do not think so. If someone have decided to go eat lunch or dinner at a restaurant, they will go do it. It does in no way create the same atmosphere to go and buy “left-overs”. I think this would only be a contributor to additional income for restaurants, and lower waste of food.

  4. I see discount hunting in the same way like Anna already said. If that becomes a problem restaurant owners need to focus more on the customer experience. Even if I’m food lover it rarely is only the excellent food which makes the experience excellent. With this app I use more these services than I would do when I have to pay the normal price and also must have right kind of mood for going out to eat. This makes everyday eating easier!

  5. This must be perfect for students or for organizations that hand out food for those who need help. It can also be convenient for people who are always on the move and who do not have time to cook at home.

  6. I´m a big fan of the idea behind the project and I think it targets one of our main daily problems with food waste. In addition, restaurants lead by example and become influencer for the customer and his/her daily handling with food waste.
